The Short Answer
Most common boiler faults can be fixed on the same day, often within a few hours of your call – provided an engineer is available in your area and the parts are in the van. The longer answer depends on the nature of the fault and the boiler make and model.
Same-Day Repairs: When They're Possible
Same-day repairs are possible when:
- The fault is a common one (low pressure, ignition failure, faulty thermocouple, pump fault)
- An engineer is available in your area on that day
- The required part is carried in the engineer's van or available from a local supplier
Experienced local engineers who work in a specific area (like Whitebox Heating does across the RH and BN areas) carry a wide range of commonly-needed parts. This significantly increases the chance of a first-visit fix.
When Repairs Take Longer
Some repairs take longer – usually because a specific part needs to be ordered. Uncommon boiler models, discontinued brands, or major components (PCBs, heat exchangers) may require a parts order of 1–3 working days. The engineer will let you know at the diagnostic visit.
How Long Does the Repair Take?
Once an engineer is on site with the right part:
- Simple fixes (pressure issue, thermocouple, condensate blockage): 30–60 minutes
- Intermediate repairs (pump, diverter valve, gas valve): 1–2 hours
- Major repairs (PCB, heat exchanger): 2–4 hours
Tips to Speed Up Your Repair
- Note your boiler's make, model, and age before calling (usually on a label inside the boiler casing)
- Note any error codes showing on the display
- Describe what happened before the boiler stopped working
- Check the pressure gauge reading
Having this information ready helps us diagnose faster and check parts availability before the engineer arrives.
