What Is an A-Rated Boiler?
All modern condensing gas boilers sold in the UK are rated under the ErP (Energy-related Products) system, which uses an A–G efficiency scale. An A-rated gas boiler achieves a seasonal efficiency of 90% or above – meaning less than 10% of the gas you pay for is wasted as heat through the flue. For comparison, older non-condensing boilers typically achieve only 70–80% efficiency.
The good news: every new gas boiler installed in the UK today is A-rated or higher. You cannot legally install a non-condensing (below A-rated) gas boiler in a UK home. So if you're replacing a boiler, any new unit you receive will be A-rated as standard.
A-Rated vs A+ Rated Boilers
Some boilers achieve A+ or even A++ ratings in the ErP system, indicating efficiency above 98%. These are typically the most advanced condensing models from premium brands. In practice, the real-world efficiency difference between an A-rated and A+ rated boiler is modest – often just 1–3%. The bigger factor in your actual gas bill is how your home is insulated and how your controls are set up.
Our Honest Take
As heating engineers who install and repair boilers from all major brands every week, we have clear views on reliability, repairability, and value. Here's our honest assessment, based on real-world experience – not manufacturer marketing.
Worcester Bosch – Our Top Recommendation
Worcester Bosch is consistently the brand we recommend most. The reasons:
- Excellent build quality and long-term reliability
- Industry-leading warranty of up to 10 or 12 years (for accredited installers)
- Parts widely available and well-priced
- Good customer support
- Strong resale value for your property
The main downside is cost – Worcester Bosch is typically one of the more expensive brands at the point of purchase. But the longer warranty and reliability usually make it better value over its lifespan.
Vaillant – Close Second
Vaillant is German-engineered and exceptionally well-built. The ecoTEC range is one of the most popular in the UK, and rightfully so. Vaillant boilers are efficient, durable, and repair parts are readily available. Warranty terms are strong when installed by accredited installers. Slightly more expensive than some competitors but absolutely worth it.
Ideal – Best Value
Ideal boilers offer excellent value for money. They're UK-manufactured, reliable, and we see fewer early failures with Ideal than with some cheaper imports. The Logic+ and Vogue ranges are our preferred models. Warranty is typically 7–10 years. A solid choice for budget-conscious buyers who don't want to compromise on quality.
Baxi – Solid Mid-Range
Baxi is a long-established UK brand with a good reputation. Reliable, reasonable warranty terms, and widely-stocked parts. Not as premium as Worcester Bosch or Vaillant but performs well in the mid-range. A good option if you want a reliable, well-supported boiler at a mid-range price point.
Brands We're More Cautious About
We're more cautious about recommending some budget brands that are heavily marketed on price. While upfront cost is lower, we see more reliability issues and find that parts are sometimes harder to source, leading to longer repair waits. We won't name them here, but we'll give you an honest view when you ask us.
Best Boiler for Replacement in 2025
If you're replacing an old boiler, our 2025 recommendation for most UK homes is the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 or Vaillant ecoTEC Plus. Both are A-rated (ErP), offer strong manufacturer warranties when fitted by accredited installers, and have excellent parts availability across the South East. For budget-conscious buyers, the Ideal Logic+ Max is our preferred alternative – UK-made, reliable, and competitively priced.
Our Summary
For most homes in the RH and BN areas, we recommend Worcester Bosch or Vaillant for the best long-term value. For budget-conscious buyers, Ideal is our preferred alternative. All three brands are A-rated and represent the best boiler choices for replacement in 2025. Call us to discuss which boiler is right for your home, size, and budget.
